Feature: North York Central Library Book Club
Established in 2005 in response to a local community request, the North York Central Library Book Club has quickly become known for its choice of books that are as varied as the eight departments comprising this large library. This is, after all, the meeting place of a gargoyle-sculpting schizophrenic, a man who walked across Afghanistan and a 12th century woman who became Pope.
Members enjoy the challenge of switching up their reading choices, discussing a wide range of current literary fiction and non-fiction, including biography, travel, popular science and poetry. A frequent comment heard round the table: “I’m so glad we read this book because I never would have chosen it myself.”
Book club co-ordinators, Ellen Lewkowicz and Jane Litherland, have developed a unique feature by regularly inviting authors to join the discussion. Helen Humphreys (The Lost Garden), Ursula Hegi (The Worst Thing I’ve Done), Gil Adamson (The Outlander), Kim Moritsugu (The Glenwood Treasure), Howard Akler (The City Man) and, most recently, Andrew Davidson (Gargoyle) have attended the program to answer questions and hear ‘straight from the horse's mouth’ how the public receives their books. “The authors bring another layer of depth to the discussion that stays with you long after the program ends,” says Ellen.
For the autumn of 2009 Ellen and Jane have organized another eclectic line-up of titles – the funny, ribald Gods Behaving Badly, the timely, contemplative Reluctant Fundamentalist and the uplifting, spiritual memoir, Eat, Pray, Love. Fine fare for the reader with broad taste.
