Recent films based on great books:
- The King's Speech by Mark Logue. The film starring Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush recently opened in Toronto; this account of King George VI of Britain and his speech therapist was a favourite at the TIFF.
- The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich is the basis for David Fincher's un-Friendly The Social Network, the story behind Facebook.
- Between a Rock and a Hard Place is Aron Ralston's harrowing tale brought to the big screen as 127 Hours starring (mmm…) James Franco.
- Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. Jack Black stars in a (really) loose adaptation of this classic 18th century satire. (did you know that Gulliver's first name was Lemuel? )
- Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon star in the Coen Brothers remake of True Grit, based on the 1968 novel by Charles Portis. Compare and see if you still like the John Wayne version better.
- A gender-bending version of Shakespeare's Tempest is out – this remake stars Helen Mirren as Prospera along with Felicity Jones, David Strathairn, and Russell Brand (yes, that Russell Brand).
