September Read

The Best Laid Plans by Terry Fallis

Daniel AddisoBest laid plansn, speech writer for the Liberal Leader of the Opposition, wants to get out of politics.  After accepting a faculty job at the University of Ottawa, he discovers that his life in Canadian politics is not yet over.  As penance for deserting his party on the eve of an election, Daniel must find a Liberal candidate to run in the ultra- Conservative Cumberland riding. Although it proves to be a difficult task, Daniel makes a deal with his landlord, cantankerous Engineering Professor Angus McCli ntock.  McClintock reluctantly agrees to stand as a candidate in name only provided Daniel will teach English to his first year engineering students.

Although the chances of winning the election are miniscule, Canadian politics is never predictable.  Suddenly Daniel finds himself with a colourful assortment of campaign workers, a candidate who won’t make public appearances and a chance to win the election.
