The longlist for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction 2017 has been announced. Thirteen titles from 144 entries published in the United Kingdom in English between October 2016 and September 2017 have been selected.

The 2017 judges are Baroness Lola Young (Chair), literary critic Lila Azam Zanganeh, novelist Sarah Hall, artist Tom Phillips and travel writer Colin Thubron.

The longlist includes Arundhati Roy's second novel – she wrote her first, The God of Small Things, over 20 years ago (it won'the Man Booker). There are two titles from Ireland, four from the UK, four from the US, and two from Pakistan. There are no Canadians on this year's list.

The shortlist will be announced on September 13; the winner will be announced on October 17. The 2016 Man Booker Prize went to The Sellout by Paul Beatty.

  1. The longlist includes Arundhati Roy’s second novel – she wrote her first, The God of Small Things, over 20 years ago (it won’the Man Booker). Why special mention?

  2. Hi Brandon – it’s been widely reported that this is Roy’s return to fiction writing after a markedly long absence. I haven’t read Roy’s new book yet – and from what I can see, the reviews have been largely mixed – and not altogether positive. Have you read it yet?
I have a number of titles on hold which I’m eagerly waiting for – I was lucky enough to get The History of Wolves in ebook this morning! A debut author no less.

  3. When I first heard that Americans were going to be eligible for the Man Booker, I was worried that Canadians might get pushed out or at least pushed to the side. It appears those fears were founded.
I am not saying the writers on this list are not worthy. But why couldn’t the Man Booker award, a prize available only to Commonwealth writers whose books were published in the UK, remain just that?

  4. I remember the heated debates on this issue when it was proposed. However, as you recall – two Canadians made the shortlist last year even after they opened it up. And The Sellout was not necessarily a front runner in the US. But I know that the long tradition of the Man Booker as a UK/Commonwealth prize was certainly shaken and I’m not entirely sure I understand the urgency to open it to the US.
