The Compass of Pleasure

We live in a culture based on rewarding
ourselves, and this often has positive and negative effects.

For example, some people reward themselves
with fatty foods after a week of eating healthily, or go on a shopping spree
after earning a great paycheque.  As
contradictory as these habits might seem, we all tend to do them and “feel” better while doing it… it’s all about “treating
ourselves” – right?

These habits and more are covered in a new
book by David J. Linden called “The Compass of Pleasure: How Our
Brains Make Fatty Foods, Orgasm, Exercise, Marijuana, Generosity, Vodka,
Learning, and Gambling Feel So Good”.

Linden explains how pleasure affects us
at the most fundamental level: in our brain.
This book makes for a very interesting read and will have you reflecting
on what you find pleasure in and how you reward yourself.
