Happy Chinese New Year!
Happy new year to all those in our communities celebrating Lunar New Year this Friday, February 16. We're saying goodbye to the year of the Rooster, and hello to the year of the Dog. According to the Chinese Zodiac, those born in the year of the Dog have a strong sense of loyalty, and are always ready to help others!
With Friday being a school PA day, it's a great opportunity to come visit us for a fun Chinese New Year activity! Join us at Steeles Branch for a lesson in Chinese calligraphy, at Cedarbrae Branch for a fun craft program, or at Spadina Road Branch for a storytime. Here's a full list of Chinese New Year programs happening on February 16.
While you're visiting your local library, you can also browse a variety of materials in both simplified and traditional Chinese for all age groups. Pick up a storybook that explains the festivities that Chinese New Year brings, or check out the latest feature films in Cantonese or Mandarin.
Wishing you and your family a joyous and prosperous new year. 恭喜发财!

Why is a Chinese New Year item placed under “New to Canada”?
For your information, there have been Chinese Canadians for more than 100 years. Would you put a bagpipe parade under “New to Canada”? This promotes stereotyping.
Thank you for your comment. The “New To Canada” blog aims to celebrate the diversity of Toronto and highlights many cultural events and holidays. By no means did we mean to imply that Chinese Canadians have not had a long history in Canada.
