What's New in the Science World This winter we're bringing a stunning array of scientific talks to library branches across the city. At Agincourt, Linda Tu presents a series on Thursdays, 6:30 pm: Recent Advances in the Sciences. She starts with the cosmos (Feb. 17), then zeroes in on planet earth (Mar.3) and wraps up with a look at some frontiers in understanding how humans tick (Mar. 17). |

A Five-Branch Tour of the Universe Dr. John Percy, Professor Emeritus in Astronomy and Astrophysics at U of T takes listeners on a tour of the universe. One World, One Sky, One Exciting Universe looks at how many cultures over thousands of years have used the sky as clock, calendar and compass. As he says, "we are all star stuff!" This talk is at York Woods, Jan 20, 2 pm; Don Mills, Jan 27, 7 pm and Agincourt, Mar. 24, 6:30 pm.n recent years astronomers have revealed a real universe that is just as amazing as the imaginary universe of science fiction books, movies, and video games. In Dr. Percy's talk, The Amazing Universe, you'll find out what's really known about alien worlds, extraterrestrial life, the birth and death of stars, cosmic catastrophes, black holes, dark matter, and dark energy. |

Strange New Worlds with Ray Jayawardhana In his new book, Strange New Worlds: The Search for Alien Planets and Life Beyond Our Solar System, renowned astronomer Ray Jayawardhana brings the latest news from the forefront of research, including some of his own findings, and tells a tale rich in history and personalities.
