eReader Fair
"What eReader do I chose?" You want to read eBooks but the first question is "What do I read them on?". The number of new devices is dizzying: Kobo (various types), Blackberry Playbook, iPad, iPod, Sony, Nook, Mp3 player, laptop or smartphone. Do I need eInk or back-light? Do I want colour or black and white? Will the type size be what I need? How much am I willing to spend? Once I get the thing what can I read on it … and how?
Relax. Riverdale Branch staff will help you chose. We have a variety of eReaders for you to try out for yourself. Library staff will demonstrate their use and applications in informal hands-on sessions on Tuesday, June 19 from 2:00-4:00 pm and from 6:00-8:00 pm. You can even bring your laptop and/or eReader and we will get you set up so you can download books from TPL and other free and commercial sites.
If you want to try it yourself at home check out the Library's on-line resources. If you go to Downloads and eBooks on our homepage you will find links to instructions for many eReaders. For even more help two TPL blogs, Computer and Library Learning and the Web Team Blog, have lots of good content. The Web Team Blog has information on eReaders and how to place holds on eBooks.
"What can I read on this thing?" I'd like to say "The skies the limit" but we live in a less than perfect world. Several publishing firms are no longer selling eBooks to libraries but TPL has been at the forefront of the movement to get more on-line for you. Thousands of eBooks are provided free to library users through OverDrive and Ebsco eBooks and many more will be available in the future.
OK. All that is good–now for the serious stuff. "How do I carry that reader around with me?" An eReader is as convenient as a paperback. They are feather-light, smaller than a standard hardcover book and can easily slip into your bag. I have mine in a rather dull cover but check Etsy for some stunning cases and some neat disguises.
Hope to see you all on Tuesday. If you can't make it please call the branch and we
will set up an appointment to help you through any hiccups you are having setting up your accounts and eReader. Just call 416-393-7720.
