Nimona by Noelle StevensonNimona by Noelle Stevenson is a webcomic-turned-graphic novel published by HarperCollins publishers.

The world of Nimona is a living entity, woven with magic explained by science and science explained by magic. It’s a subversion of all things fantasy and superpowered; the good guys are evil, the heroes aren’t confident, and the villains have their own story to tell.  The story follows the protagonist, a supervillain with a head in science and a punny name, and his arch-nemesis, a golden-haired knight with an equally punny name. Balthazar Blackheart and Ambrosius Goldenloin have their classic bad guy vs good guy trope turned on its head when Blackheart’s moral-less sidekick comes onto the scene, the hero that no one wanted or thought they needed: Nimona.

Stevenson’s unique art style captures the gritty feel of Nimona perfectly. Words just can’t describe that beautiful feeling of a dragon coloured perfectly with marker, where the black is just black enough to seem shimmering. It’s amazing how a simple webcomic has evolved to win awards and eventually became a #1 New York Times bestseller. Endless praise to Stevenson and her brilliant storytelling.

To those of you who normally “shun” any form of graphic storytelling, I implore you, try out Nimona. You won’t be disappointed.
