Fiction of the Week for July 27: The Juvie Three

July 30, 2009 | Word Out Team | Comments (140)

Our featured Fiction book this week is Gordon Korman's The Juvie Three, and selector Little n. shares her thoughts with us.

Book coverThe Juvie three is a great read about second chances, calamity and best-case scenarios. If you like Gordon Korman, then you’ll like this book – it’s a classic Korman story. Let me first introduce you to the players; born to be bad Terence, get-away driver Gecko, friendly giant Arjay, and fearless leader Douglas Healy. Terrence, Gecko, and Arjay are young boys who found themselves in bad situations on the streets and in juvenile hall as a result. These boys had little chance of living a normal life until they meet Douglas Healy. Healy is an adult who’s seen the inside of juvenile hall and has struggled with the system to give these three boys a second chance at a normal life.

Terrence, Arjay and Gecko find themselves transported from the inside of prisons, to the streets of New York City. The deal is: 6 intensive months of school, therapy and community service in exchange for a ticket to freedom and a chance at a better life. But, like all too-good-to-be-true scenarios, there is a twist – Terrence. Once in New York, Terrence is nostalgic and wants to relive his life of crime. His efforts to connect with the crime scene in New York to sell hot merchandise is thwarted by Arjay and Gecko and a freak accident, wherein Healy falls off the fire escape and ends up with retrograde amnesia. Now the boys try to cover their tracks and monitor Healy, while complying with the rules of the program.

The question is: will they keep on track, or will they screw-up and become another lost cause – back to nowhere and living for nothing? For those who’ve yet to read the book, don’t sweat it. Of course there’s a happy, too-good-to-be-true ending.

But let’s say happy-go-lucky-super-optimistic Gordan Korman did not write the book. Let’s say you did. You’ve come up with the same players, the same second chance scenario, but you’re down to the last few chapters and you need an ending. How would you end the story? Do you think people can change? Do you believe in second chances? Do you believe in dumb luck? Can a person turn their life around when given the right opportunities?

Little n. is an outreach librarian. She's always on the look out for good books and good company.
