Favourite Read-aloud Books in Baby Time
In Baby Time we started our winter sessions with Read to Your Bunny by Rosemary Wells. This is a rhyming picture book with charming illustrations of bunnies reading books. It ends with the advice “Read to your bunny often, and your bunny will read to you”. Rosemary Wells is an author and illustrator who promotes reading aloud to very young children. Learn more about Rosemary Wells, her artwork, her many children’s books (including the popular Max and Ruby series), and information for paren'ts about the importance of “reading to your bunny” at: www.rosemarywells.com

Denise Fleming is another favorite author. We read her book Barnyard Banter. It has large colourful pictures of animals and is a great read aloud book. Babies enjoy the rhyming animal sounds and the rhythm of the story. The book is also fun because there is a game in searching for the picture of the goose. For more about Denise Fleming and how she creates her books and artwork see: www.denisefleming.com
We also read Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. In this book, which compares babies born in various circumstances, there is lots of repetitive and rhyming text for babies to enjoy. At her website www.memfox.com find Mem Fox’s “Ten read aloud commandments” on reading to children. It includes advice such as spending “at least ten wildly happy minutes every single day reading aloud” and reading at least three stories a day to your child – it can even be the same story three times.
