What the Dickens?

Happy Birthday, Charles Dickens!  Did you know February 7th marks the 200th birhday of Charles Dickens, one of my all time favourite authors.

How well do you know your Dickens?  Take a short quiz here.

Need to brush up, or want to know more about this Victorian superstar?  Luckily, the library has lots of great books, ebooks and dvds about Dickens…

…and by Dickens (my personal favourites are below, what are some of yours?)

My favourite Dickensian characters: Miss Havisham (from Great Expectations) and Wilkins Micawber (from David Copperfield- reportedly based on Dickens's own father John).

Many of Dickens works have been made into great movies or tv series, including the classic Great Expectations, directed by David Lean;  David Copperfield starring a very, very young Daniel Radcliffe (aka Harry Potter); or the musical Oliver! based on Oliver Twist.

Or, if you are short on time, here is a video from the BBC with everything you need to know about Charles Dickens in under 5 minutes.  Enjoy.

  1. I like Quilp from the Old Curiosity Shop. He’s so creepy and evil that you can’t help but smirk every page he shows up on. I also like all the characters from Pickwick Papers, as they’re still as funny today as back in the 19th century!
