Celebrate Malala
On July 12, Malala Yousafzai turns 16 years old.
This is remarkable, because on October 9, 2012, Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban while she was returning home from school. Her crime was simply doing something we take for granted –attending school. Malala had been a blogger and youth activist campaigning for the right for all girls to attend school when she was suddenly struck down. Malala beat the odds and defied her attackers. She recovered.
To celebrate this momentous day, Malala will be giving her first public speech since being shot. Her story is an inspiration to all and on July 12 Malala will lead the United Nations General Assembly in a Youth Takeover, where hundreds of youth from over 80 countries will gather at the United Nations in New York City. Their message: quality education for all.
Malala's tenacity, courage and passion is extraordinary; the fact that she is only 16 is also amazing, but her message is most important, that youth can make a difference, and to stand up for what you think is right.
