Descanse em paz Cesária Évora – R.I.P
To listen to the music of Cesária Évora is like eating chocolate while crying – both delicious and sad at the same time. The barefoot diva died December 17th at the too young age of 70. Singing in Portuguese (born on the island of Cape Verde and of creole background) she was part of the World Music explosion in the mid 1980s and 1990s that exposed Europe and North America to entirely different types of music.
When I listen to her sing it gives me goosebumps – like listening to an opera where you don't understand the language but the skill and emotion of the singer nonetheless conveys the meaning.
The Toronto Public Library has a wide selection of her CDs available to borrow. The Essential Cesaria Evora might be a good place to start. Enjoy a legend.
