Spreading the Love of Art across the City
Artists in the Library is a residency program to celebrate the love of art at Toronto Public Library (TPL) branches across the city. Toronto Public Library has partnered with Toronto Arts Council on a three-year pilot project to welcome renowned artists on a four month residency to spread the love of art in neighbourhoods outside of the downtown core.
In 2014, Artists in the Library hosted five artists at five library branches – Oakwood Village, Cedarbrae, Mimico, Downsview and Fairview – who animated the branches with community-engaged artists from September to December 2014.
From steel pan to storytelling to spoken word. Communities across the selected branches gained access to art program and activities that gave them an opportunity to learn and develop skills.
This year, due to high level of interest, the program has expanded to four more branches, bringing the total to nine, including TPL’s 100th branch, Scarborough Civic Centre branch.
Toronto Public Library has rich and wide variety of successful arts programs throughout the system. From Culture Days to art exhibits and residencies for authors, innovators and illustrators. This program expands cultural program to provide free and accessible activities throughout the city.
