Olympic Views — From the Couch
I don’t know about you, but I’m so excited about the XXIII Winter Olympic Games, opening in Pyeongchang, Korea on Friday, February 9th! Winter Olympics are my favourite thing – and I start training early. I’ve been working out daily, because I know that for the next two weeks, my physical activity will be limited to clicking the remote.
I plan my menus in advance – absorbing the host nation culturally, virtually and physically. Lucky for me, the library has a great selection of Korean cookbooks.
I love watching winter sports, and I love learning about the host nation – with the help of the library’s travel collection. There’s so much to learn about the art, history and culture.
But it's not just the sport – for me, it’s the whole package – starting with the couch commentary on the athletes' costumes as they march into the stadium for the opening.
There have been so many memorable Olympic moments over the years. Who could forget Eddie the Eagle?
Or Canada’s golden boy Gaetan Boucher?
We’ll always love you Nancy!
Who can forget the Battle of the Brians in Calgary in 1988?
Or the 1980 Lake Placid Games – the thrill of victory with the Miracle on Ice, and the agony of defeat when Ken Reid lost his ski during the Lake Placid games?
Every Olympics has its star – remember La Bomba?
Who will be this year's star? Only one more sleep until we find out!
