Listen to Toronto Public Library’s New Podcasts!

Do you like podcasts? Do you like podcasts about romance, werewolves, improv, Toronto, jogging in laneways, robot battles, cannabis and/or libraries?

If your answer is "I'm not sure what a podcast is", check out this post for some examples. (Spoiler: they're like radio shows, but online.)

But if your answer is "Yes", you're in luck: Toronto Public Library now has two new podcasts, featuring all of those things and more.

Shelve-under-podcast

In Shelve Under: Podcast, four library staffers – Christina, Mike, Jason and Wendy – explore intriguing topics with a diverse array of guests, including author Vicki Essex, improv pioneer Cameron Algie, Maker Festival director Eric Boyd and a bevy of behind-the-scenes library people.

Between now and May, new episodes will come out the second Wednesday of every month. Today's new episode, Shelve Under: Toronto, features CBC's Metro Morning host Matt Galloway discussing his favourite books and his favourite city (bet you can't guess which one it is).

The podcast got its start via the Library's Staff Innovation Program, an incubator program that gives staff resources and support to try new initiatives.

To listen, visit the TPL podcasts page, tpl.ca/podcasts. Shelve Under: Podcast is also available on Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts and other platforms.

To share feedback and ideas, contact the hosts at shelveunder@torontopubliclibrary.ca.

Live-mic-podcast

And Live Mic: The Best of TPL Conversations presents onstage discussions with some of today’s best-known writers, thinkers and personalities, the second Thursday of each month. In the first episode, Cannabis and You, Toronto Star editor Irene Gentle discusses the legalization of cannabis with a panel of experts.

To listen, visit the TPL podcast page, tpl.ca/podcasts. Live Mic is also available on Apple Podcasts and other platforms.

  1. Hot takes from Matt Galloway? Who would have thought? How terribly original. Put Faith Goldy on your show and I’ll know you’re serious about diversity. (You are, aren’t you?)
But, like other beginners (and Windows users), TPL fails to publish the one and only necessary feature that makes a series of audio files a podcast: Its RSS feed. No, my friends, a link to “Apple Podcasts” is not a link to an RSS feed.
For Shelve Under, the RSS feed is:
    https://rss.simplecast.com/podcasts/5833/rss
For Live Mic (sic), the RSS feed is:
    https://rss.simplecast.com/podcasts/8557/rss
You don’t know this (you’re beginners and you’re Windows users), but the only thing any would-be subscriber needs in order to listen to your series of audio files is the address of the RSS feed. Literally nothing else. Apple anything, iTunes anything, and Google anything all are not required.
