Stanley Cup 2019: Game Seven Tonight!
All eyes in Toronto are, of course, currently riveted on the Raptors, but game seven of the Stanley Cup finals between the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins (boooooo!) goes down tonight, which means somebody's going to hoist the Cup this evening. It doesn't get much better than when the finals come down to one winner-takes-all game, and this is the first Stanley Cup game seven since 2011.
In that spirit, here are a few vintage Stanley Cup photos from the Toronto Star Photograph Archive, part of our Digital Archive collection.
Hockey Hall of Fame goalie Ken Dryden strikes a heroic pose while making a save in the 1976 final against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Canadiens swept the series to win their first of four consecutive Cups. Toronto Star Photograph Archive, 1976.
Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky celebrates after winning the Edmonton Oilers' first Cup and ending the New York Islanders' reign as four-time champs in 1984. Toronto Star Photograph Archive, 1984.
Centre Brian Skrudland of the Montreal Canadiens is mobbed by his teammates after scoring what still stands as the fastest overtime goal in Stanley Cup playoff history (nine seconds). It tied the series with the Calgary Flames 1-1 and the Canadiens went on to win in five games. Toronto Star Photograph Archive, 1986.
Gerry Desjardins of the Buffalo Sabres was the winning goalie in game four of the 1974 finals against the Flyers, but Philadelphia won'the series – and their first Stanley Cup – in six games. Toronto Star Photograph Archive, 1974.
Canadiens captain Yvan Cournoyer lets loose after his team's sweep of the Flyers in the 1976 finals. Toronto Star Photograph Archive, 1976.
The Cup cut a svelter figure back in 1947, when the Maple Leafs beat the Canadiens in six games. Here, Leafs captain Syl Apps and coach Hap Day celebrate what would be the first of three consecutive Cups. It was a different time. Toronto Star Photograph Archive, 1947.
Leafs captain George Armstrong holds the Cup in front of what was then a brand-new City Hall after Toronto's 1967 victory. Toronto Stat Photograph Archive, 1967.

It’s fun to watch the final minutes and see the team captain hoist the cup for the first time- a truly great moment!
Thanks for the great review. One thing though, small typo captain’s name of the Montreal Canadiens is Yvan Cournoyer not Court. Great memories.
Right you are, thanks! Fixed!
