I Work in a Round Library and it Reminds Me of Christmas Cookies

My grandmother used to say there are two kinds of people in the world – those who eat Christmas cookies and those who make them. I will freely admit I'm the former, but we need both kinds of folks to really close the loop on Christmas cookies.

I've just started working at the S. Walter Stewart Branch, which was built in 1960 and is round. Some say it's got that UFO / Cold War / futuristic design but for me, at this time of the year, it reminds me of a Christmas cookie. When I told this to the staff here, we had a lively discussion about baking and you've heard it here first … I am a willing guinea pig for anyone else's baking so I'm hoping for something tasty in the next short while.

S. Walter Stewart Library Branch built 1960

S. Walter Stewart Branch opened in 1960.  At the time of its opening, it was one of four circular libraries in the world. Designed by Parrot, Tambling, and Wibtmer, the circular shape had a 120-foot circumference and the building included 24,000 square feet of space.

I do recall my Greek Macedonian mom making Kourabiedes (kind of like a Greek shortbread) in various shapes for Xmas. I remember thinking how smart she was to use a glass to create the half moon shape.  And after they were made then she would cover them in icing sugar which reminded me of snow, and made stealing one hard as the icing sugar always fell off on my shirt.

So … if you are a cookie maker then please enjoy these books (cookie eaters like me will appreciate it, too):

  1. What a great post! I will be thinking of Christmas cookies when I go to S Walter Stewart this afternoon…(it’s my local branch and I love it). Good roundup of the many Christmas and holiday books too, I will have to check some of them out.
I hate to say Granny was wrong, but I and many of my friends both eat and make Christmas cookies!

  2. Thanks for the great list of baking books, Bill. I am more of a cookie baker, but of course I have to sample what I make to make sure it is okay! I make gingerbread and shortbread for Christmas for sure, but thanks to your list I will no doubt try a new recipe!

  4. I knew I was attracted to SWS branch for a good reason. Nothing better than a cookie-shaped library!
I love the aerial shot of the model library! Unique in 1960 and 2019 alike.

  5. Thank you Bill for the list of baking books. I will have to have a look, since these are new to me. I should pay a visit to S. Walter Stewart, one of the libraries I have never visited.
