The Criterion Collection: Classic Film Recommendations
Are you a fan of classic film? Many classic films from the Criterion Collection are available through Toronto Public Library. Some are also available to be streamed on Kanopy, one of our digital collections.
The Criterion Collection started in 1984. Since then, they have been at the forefront of releasing well-known and obscure films from around the world.
Criterion’s discs are a cinephile’s dream. They have beautifully restored prints of the films, commentary tracks by the filmmakers and/or film scholars, and supplemental documentaries about the films too.
Here are some of my personal favourites and recommendations.
Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush
Federico Fellini’s I Vitelloni
Hal Ashby’s Harold and Maude
Robert Altman’s The Player

That’s a fun selection of titles, Thomas.
Well, the Chaplin ones & Harold and Maude definitely are, but the other films are pretty heavy going, although they have some fun moments.
