THE PLAY: Bernice Trimble is a vivacious recently widowed 59-year old who has been
diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s and must navigate sharing the news with her three
adult children. The shock of this news reverberates through the family, creating very
different responses from the siblings and exposing the forces that bind and pull in their
relationships. Iris, the middle daughter, narrates the story, as all aspects of the ties that
hold a family together come out…love, pain, anger and humour.,
CHARACTERS:
• Bernice (59): a strong, practical woman with a sense of humour, facing a fate she
witnessed in her mother
• Iris (20s–30s): middle child, narrator and Bernice’s confidant, somewhat stoic,
practical, funny- centres the story
• Peter (20s–30s): the youngest, a mathematician who is somewhat socially
awkward, clever and introverted
• Sarah (20s–30s): eldest, somewhat frantic, headstrong woman, obsessively
focused on her child
PREPARATION:
• Auditionees must read the play (available at the Toronto Public Library).
• Please prepare a 1-2 minute dramatic monologue
• There will also be a cold read from the play
