Jog for a Cause

Running Fundraising through a running, walking or cycling event has been a hallmark of the 20th century.  To test the validity of this statement, ask anybody if they know of Terry Fox.  Yes… he is the man with an amputated leg who partook in a risky pan-Canadian jog to raise awareness and money for cancer research.  Today, more and more individuals and organizations participate in events like these to raise awareness and money for causes that support vulnerable groups.

This year, the Toronto Public Library (TPL) will continue their annual participation in the Toronto Challenge on Sunday June 12, 2011.  The Toronto Challenge is a walking and running event that raises money for non-profit organizations that provide services to improve the quality of life of seniors.  TPL provides many services to seniors. Providing access to quality information is the nucleus of our services, so this year the money raised will support our Home Library Service.  Home Library Service is an exceptional service that delivers library materials to thousands of homes of our most elderly and disabled patrons that struggle to make the trip to the library due to their physical limitations.

If you are interested in helping seniors have access to literature and other library materials, you can pledge me as a runner!  Think of your donation [every dollar counts] as a gift delivery to the most physically immobile people of our community.  I’m registered for the 5K Run, the most challenging race of the event.  It’s my first time running in over 10 years, but I promise to give it all my blood and sweat.

  1. I’ve received some interest from pledgers. To make the process easy for everyone, I’ve created a webpage through Canada Helps. Please see the click the following link and search “Jorge Rivera” in the name field if your interested in donating.

Remember, if you donate $10 CAD or more, the Toronto Public Library Foundation will issue a tax-receipt.
Oh and by the way, I finished the 5K Run in 22 minutes and I met Jane Pyper, our very own City Librarian! I must say that she is super friendly, we’re happy to have her represent the Toronto Public Library. I even got to take a picture with her… woohoo!
