The Immigrant Experience: Where to Go?
How does it feel to be an immigrant? I can’t give you any first-hand sentiments but I imagine that
knowing the language and the ‘system of things’ is a forefront issue. Let me give you an example: suppose you are new to this country and you are seeking shelter, but you need assistance. In a mega city like Toronto, where do you begin? Street signs and directional information are posted in a foreign language, so it’s likely difficult to get around the city.
It’s important to know, as non-immigrants and immigrants, that referral services for immigrants are available, which make both language and ‘the system of things’ much easier to navigate. Beginning on July 5 and through to August 12, we are pleased to offer settlement services here in our very own facility. Two settlement workers from North York Community House will be available to answer all your questions and concerns about settling in Canada. They are knowledgeable, trained and experienced staff that speak a combined five languages that accommodate the linguistic needs of the community.
The advantage of this service in libraries is the “walk-in clinic” format, no appointments or registration required…thumbs up for improved accessibility and convenience! We’ve also been working closely with the settlement workers to offer a valuable program series for newcomers. We have guest speakers that will speak about Tenant Rights in Ontario, Financial Literacy for newcomers, and a Resume and Cover Letter workshop. See program details or Download Newcomer Program Series flyer for more details.
Please also do not forget about all the wonderful library resources available to newcomers. We have an extensive ESL collection, highly functional premium databases, and we offer numerous programs across the city. See the Newcomers to Canada webpage and www.settlement.org.
