Yesterday, the National Book Foundation held its annual awards ceremony to celebrate the best in Amercian writing.

Great-world 2009 Winners:
FICTION: Colum McCann,
Let the Great World Spin , an allegorical story inspired by the events of 9/11 and set around Philippe Petit's tightrope walk between the twin towers in 1974.

NON-FICTION: T. J. Stiles, The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt

DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTION TO AMERICAN LETTERS: Gore Vidal

LITERARIAN AWARD: Dave Eggers
