More Good News for Small Publishers: Lord of Misrule wins NBA
Last week Johanna Skibsrud's novel The Sentimentalists won'the Scotiabank Giller Prize; a triumph for both the 30-year old writer and also for her publisher, Gasperau Press, a small publisher located in Kentville, Nova Scotia. One of the few Canadian publishers who print and bind their books in house, they are dedicated to maintaining the connection between publishing and the print arts.
This week, Jaimy Gordon's novel Lord of Misrule was honoured with the National Book Award for fiction. Gordon, like Skibsrud, has used a small independent publisher. McPherson and Company Publishers is an independent literary publishing house founded in 1974 and located in Kingston, New York.
Lord of Misrule is a novel set in the world of horse racing. Gordon explores the violent and ruthless world at the lower end of the sport of kings.
The National Book Award for Non-Fiction was presented to Patti Smith for her memoir Just Kids. In this book, Smith explores her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and their formative years in New York during the late sixties and early seventies.
