On December 29, 1800, Charles Goodyear was born.  In 1836, he invented a process for vulcanizing rubber making the tire industry possible, leading indirectly to the creation of the road trip.

Here are five memoirs about unforgettable road trips.

Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell
Vowell takes a wacky road trip to visit key sites from three presidential assassinations.  I learned a great deal from this book.  For example when you are reading it and laughing out loud, people will ask you why.  Whatever you do, do not tell them it’s a book about the Lincoln assassination because they will look at you strangely.

Driving Mr. Albert: a Trip Across America with Einstein’s Brain by Michael Paterniti
While conducting Albert Einstein’s autopsy in 1955, pathologist Thomas Harvey removed the scientist’s brain for further study.  It remained in his New Jersey home for 42 years until he decided to return the brain to Einstein's family.  Freelance writer Michael Paterniti accompanies Harvey, documenting this unusual cross country trip.

The Great Typo Hunt: Two Friends Changing the World One Correction at a Time by Jeff Deck and Benjamin D. Herson
Deck and Herson travel around the United States armed with markers and white-out correcting spelling and punctuation on public signs.

Hitching Rides with Buddha: a Journey Across Japan by Will Ferguson
Will Ferguson recounts his adventures hitchhiking across Japan during cherry blossom season.

The Lost Continent: Travels in Small Town America by Bill Bryson
After living in England for a decade, Bryson returns to America and takes to the road searching for the quintessential small town.
