Irish writer, Colum McCann has won'the 2011 International IMPAC Dublin Literary award for his fifth novel "Let the Great World Spin." The novel centres around a rich cast of characters whose lives become entwined after Philip Petit performs his high wire act between New York's Twin Towers.

At almost $150,000 the prize money for this award is the richest in the world for a novel published in English.  Also, noteworthy is that the list of titles chosen for the judges is by Librarians from 166 Libraries around the world.  The judging panel commented:

“This is a remarkable literary work, a genuinely 21st Century novel that speaks to its time but is not enslaved by it. The human condition, the kindness and cruelty shown from one man to another, the ways in which we suffer and triumph, are subjects which have resonated through fiction for centuries…"
