The World We Found

For Bombay university students the 1970s were an exciting time. Friends Armaiti, Kavita, Nishta and Laleh were involved in the demonstrations and protests of the era, inspired by the dreams of a “new India” where women would be able to experience economic, social and political power.
Thirty years later, divisions of class and religion are still prevalent in India. The women have drifted apart. Kavita and Laleh are living middle-class lives, Nishta has converted to Islam but feels like an outsider in the Muslim community, Armaiti is living in the United States where she has recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Her dying wish is to see her four friends one final time.
The women gather to reminisce about their past and examine the choices they have made in their lives.

About the Author
Thrity Umrigar was born in 1962 in what was then Bombay, India. After receiving a Bachelor of Science from Bombay University, she moved to the United States to continue her education, earning a Master of Arts from Ohio State and a Ph.D in English from Kent State. As a journalist she has contributed to numerous publications including The Washington Post and other national newspapers.
The recipient of the Nieman Fellowship to Harvard University, Umrigar currently lives in Cleveland, Ohio where she teaches creative writing and literature at Case Western Reserve University.
