Toronto Book Awards – Writing Gordon Lightfoot: the Man, the Music and the World in 1972
The winner of this year’s Toronto Book Awards will be announced on Thursday, October 11.
Dave Bidini’s Writing Gordon Lightfoot: The Man, the Music and the World in 1972 is one of this year's nominees.
Bidini, celebrated Toronto writer journalist and musician, explores the events of the extraordinary week that lead up to the Mariposa Music Festival in 1972. This influential folk music festival, held on the Toronto Island from July 14th – 16th attracted some of the most well-known folk musicians of the day, including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot. According to Bidini, “four of the world’s greatest songwriters collected on a small island at the bottom of my city – your city, our city.” Biographical details of Lightfoot’s life are brilliantly interwoven throughout the book in the form of personal letters from Bidini written directly to Lightfoot. As Bidini states, the events that occurred that week forever transformed the nation – politically, musically and psychologically. This is a unique, fascinating and complex book.
