The 126 mm of rain recorded at Pearson Airport on Monday beat the record set in 1954 during Hurricane Hazel. Hurricane Hazel remains the deadliest natural disaster in Canadian history. Eighty-one people died during the hurricane and hundreds more were left homeless as entire neighbourhoods were destroyed.

The Hurricane Hazel tragedy is revisited in The Carnivore, a novel by Mark Sinnett. Ray Townes was a policeman in 1954 and emerged from the storm as a hero but privately he is haunted by his memories. His wife Mary, an emergency ward nurse is also changed by her experience. In the aftermath of the storm, it becomes clear that the storm has damaged more than property; the couple's relationship never recovers.

Fifty years later both Ray and Mary look back at the events that changed their lives and the lives of so many in the city.
