Gretzky

August 9, 1988 is a day that will live in infamy for many hockey fans. The trade sending Wayne Gretzky from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings was front page news as in the Globe and Mail pictured above. It was the biggest, most significant trade in NHL history. "The Trade" was responsible for increasing the interest in hockey in the United States; in Canada, feelings of betrayal were overwhelming. Who can forget the dramatic press conference?

In Gretzky's Tears: Hockey, Canada and the Day Everything Changed, Stephen Brunt examines the trade, the key personalities involved and its lasting impact on hockey.
