Remembering Mavis Gallant, 1922-2014

Mavis gallantCelebrated Canadian writer Mavis Gallant has died at the age of 91. Born in Montreal in 1922, Gallant pursued a career in writing at an early age, initially working as a reporter at the Montreal Standard newspaper from 1944-1950. In 1950, she made a decision to pursue fiction writing full time and moved to Europe where she eventually settled in Paris, moving into the small Rive Gauche apartment she inhabited until her death.

In 1981, Gallant received the Governor General's Award for Literature for Home Truths: Selected Canadian Stories. She was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1993.

Gallant released nine collections of short stories, two novels, a play and a collection of essays.
