Close Encounters: Books Beyond Fifty Shades of Grey

If you are a child who has stumbled across this post, you should stop reading it and go do something more fun with your Internet time.

The movie based on E.L. James' bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey is being released on Friday February 13. Pre-release publicity has not been overwhelmingly positive. Instead of going to a theatre this weekend, why not read a book? These books are similar to Fifty Shades of Gray but be warned–they are very racy.

  1. I can’t speak for any of these, but the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy is largely romanticizing an abusive and demeaning relationship, and I doubt that the movie will handle the material any better than the books. I would discourage everyone – especially young women – from going to watch the movie or reading the books, from further perpetuating the idea that men like Christian Grey are the ideal when looking for a dominant partner. I don’t mean to shame people who enjoy reading these types of books, but wouldn’t it be more refreshing to write a blog about some of the healthier romantic relationships in books today?
