For the Rides: Audiobooks to Keep You Moving
It is the height of summer and some of us are spending a fair amount of time commuting to wherever we need to be and this is a great chance to listen to some great stories. Listening to a story rather than reading a story can be a different experience. When picking an audiobook you are not merely picking a story, but also a storyteller. If you do not like the voice of the reader then you may not be able to enjoy the story. Some patrons choose books by reader, not author, for the voice alone.
You should also consider how you are listening to it, for example maybe you shouldn't listen to horror in the car if it makes you jump, and you may wish to reconsider a romance story on the subway if you are prone to crying. You want to enjoy your commute as best as you can, and an audiobook can go a long way to get you there.
Bad Blood Dark of the Moon Heat Lightning
Virgil Flowers is the main character in one of John Sanford's series set in Minnesota. Flowers is as an agent of Bureau of Criminal Apprehension who loves catching criminals almost as much as he loves catching fish.
Deeply Odd Odd Apocalypse Saint Odd
Dean Koontz makes me jump everytime at some point in his stories, one I would listen to at home, not in the car. This series follow Odd Thomas, a short order cook who can see the dead, but uses this ability for good.
This series continues to be extremely popular and Jim Dale is a much praised reader. These books would be great for a ride up to cottage country with the whole family.
Death of a gentle lady Death of a Valentine
This cozy mystery features the popular character Hamish Macbeth, a policeman in the Highlands who would love nothing more than to be left alone on his beat. The reader of this series does a good Scottish accent, I believe.
Set in France in World War II a young blind girl must flee to the coast with her father. Meanwhile a young boy with a gift for radios rises through the Nazi ranks, ultimately meeting up with the young girl at the coast. This book won'the 2015 Pulizter Prize among many other accolades.
