Sarah Grimké is a young woman of privilege in 19th century Charleston. Ambitious and intelligent, Sarah wants to follow her brother and father into the legal profession but is keenly aware of the restrictions placed upon young women in society. Unable to achieve this goal, she searches for other ways to correct the wrongs she sees around her.
Handful, also called Hetty, is Sarah’s handmaid. She is a slave who is given as a birthday gift to the reluctant Sarah on her 11th birthday. Despite their positions, the girls form a powerful friendship and Sarah teaches Handful to read.
The novel follows the women for 3 decades as both women search for freedom and their places in the world.
Based on the life of abolitionist and suffragette Sarah Grimké and Hetty, one of the slaves on the Grimké plantation.
