Brief history of seven killingsMarlon James has become the first Jamaican winner of the prestigious Man Booker Prize, announced on October 13, 2015. James reports that he was so frustrated with the publishing world that he almost gave up writing a decade ago.

His novel A Brief History of Seven Killings, deals with repercussions following an attempt on the life of Bob Marley in 1976. The New York Times described it as "sweeping, mythic, over-the-top, colossal and dizzyingly complex".

Michael Wood, chair of the judging committee commented that the novel is "very exciting, very violent, full of swearing. It was a book we didn’t actually have any difficulty deciding on – it was a unanimous decision, a little bit to our surprise".
