Book of the Month–February 2017
Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson
August is an anthropologist studying mourning rituals in different cultures. She has returned to Brooklyn following the death of her father and running into one of her old friends leads to reflection on her childhood and adolescence in the borough during the 1970s. Born in Tennessee, August moved to Brooklyn, her father’s hometown, after the death of her mother. The borough is changing; as it becomes more multicultural, white residents flee for the suburbs. For August, it is overwhelming and she must adjust to her new urban life without her mother’s guidance. She bonds with three girls in the neighbourhood and together they share the joys and traumas of life while they figure out who they are and who they want to be amid the turbulence of 1970s America.
Jacqueline Woodson was born in 1963 in Columbus, Ohio. Her childhood was split between South Carolina and Brooklyn. She loved the sense of community and slow pace of the South and vibrant multiculturalism of the North. She has written extensively for children and young adults and has won numerous awards including the 2014 National Book Award (Young People’s Category) for Brown Girl Dreaming.
Another Brooklyn is her first book written for an adult audience. It was a finalist for the 2016 National Book Award.
