Victoria by Daisy Goodwin
In 1837, shortly after her eighteenth birthday, her uncle King William IV dies and Alexandrina Victoria becomes Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. One of her first acts as monarch is to drop her first name. From then on she is offically known as Victoria. Her mother, the Duchess of Kent, and her advisor Sir John Conroy had constructed an isolated childhood for Victoria to keep her away from scandal and bad influences but also to ensure her reliance upon them.
When she becomes queen, however Victoria is determined to be an independent ruler despite the doubts of those around her.
This well-researched novel is based upon the journals that Victoria kept throughout her life.
