Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese

Saul Indian Horse, an ex-hockey star, is recovering from his most recent bender–one that nearly killed him. In an effort to trace the roots of his problems with alcohol he must face his past by telling his story. Saul was born in northern Ontario where he lived with his paren'ts and older brother, Ben. His paren'ts, shattered by their experiences in residential schools, are determined that their children will escape that horror so they stay in remote areas, moving often. Unfortunately, the authorities catch up with them and Saul finds himself at St. Jerome’s Indian Residential School which he calls “hell on earth”. Torture, abuse and suicide are far more common than education at the school but Saul finds a means of escape through hockey. Naturally gifted, he finds success but his demons are never far away.
