2018 Toronto Book Award Goes to David Chariandy
On October 10, 2018, the 44th annual Toronto Book Award was presented to David Chariandy for his novel Brother. The novel tells the story of two brothers growing up in a Scarborough housing project with their Trinidadian-born mother. Chariandy's novel won The Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize and was longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize in 2017.
Presenting the award at Toronto Reference Library, city librarian Vickery Bowles said that Chariandy's book is "a rich and moving portrait of a young family trying to survive in a changing city". The jury said that "Chariandy casts off tropes that readers may expect from a story about family, violence, loss, and survival, and lets the heart of the novel, and its fully-drawn characters, dictate the course of the narrative".
The Toronto Book Award celebrates "authors of books of literary or artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto". Fiction and non-fiction works are considered for the prize.
