International Dublin Literary Award Shortlist Announced
Dublin City Council has just announced the shortlist for the International Dublin Literary Award. This award is particularly exciting for a couple of reasons:
- The prize consists of 100,000 euros, or nearly 150,000 Canadian dollars, making it one of the richer literary awards in the world. To put it in perspective, it's a tenth of a Nobel, or about three Gillers.
- Books are nominated for this prize by librarians from major urban library systems all over the world. In other words, it's international in scope, and it represents the collective book-recommending power of hundreds of librarians.
This year, 113 library systems in 40 countries nominated 141 books, which were then winnowed down to a shortlist of 10. A panel of international judges will announce the winner on June 12th.
One of Toronto Public Library's nominated titles, Exit West, by Mohsin Hamid, made the shortlist. Our two other nominees were Brother by David Chariandy, and The Ninth Hour by Alice McDermott.

I love love LOVED “Lincoln in the Bardo” but there are a lot of great titles here!
