Celebrating Schitt’s Creek: A Rose Family Reading List
Beloved Canadian sitcom Schitt's Creek triumphed at the Emmy Awards this year and I am loving that journey for them! If you haven't watched this hilarious and heartwarming show yet, fear not bébé! You can borrow seasons 1-3 from the library today.
If you're like me and you've already watched every episode, might I suggest taking your Schitt's Creek fandom in a new direction?
Reading Schitt's Creek
Books and reading are regularly depicted in really clever ways on Schitt's Creek. Sadly though, every title from "A Rare Sophistication: A Higher Aesthetic" to "Fast Forward to Success: Business the Johnny Rose Way" has been confirmed by show creators as fake.
Don't let this news turn you into a disgruntled pelican! The library's got your happy ending right here with this Rose Family inspired reading list.
Warning: a few spoilers ahead!
Johnny Rose
Things My Son Needs to Know About the World by Fredrik Backman
There is a lot to love about patriarch Johnny Rose beyond his very strong eyebrow game. Over six seasons, it has been genuinely touching to see Johnny become a much more involved dad to Alexis and David. I think Johnny would really enjoy Fredrik Backman's ode to fatherhood that's full of anecdotes, lessons and laughs.
That Will Never Work: The Birth of Netflix and the Amazing Life of an Idea by Marc Randolph
Since Johnny has reinvigorated his business career and Rosebud Motels are thriving (yay!), I think he may finally be ready to learn more about how Interflix Netflix killed the brick-and-mortar video store.
Moira Rose
Is there a more iconic character in the history of television than Moira Rose? I think not! Be sure to check out this biography of socialite and designer Daphne Guinness who is said to have inspired Moira's fabulous fashions.
Always Young and Restless: My Life On and Off America's #1 Daytime Drama by Melody Thomas Scott with Dana L. Davis
As the 12-time projected Daytime Emmy Award Winning star of Sunrise Bay, I think Moira would definitely be interested in actress Melody Thomas' new book. With an eye to penning her own memoir one day, of course.
Crow Winter by Karen McBride
Who will ever forget Moira's triumphant return to the screen in The Crows Have Eyes 3: The Crowening? To deliver her breakthrough performance as Dr. Clara Mandrake, Moira obviously learns a thing or two about our avian friends. I think Moira's interest would be piqued by this debut novel about a young woman who is able to cross between the material and spirit worlds with the help of an old crow.
David Rose
The Meaning of Mariah Carey by Mariah Carey with Michaela Angela Davis
We leave Rose family prodigal son David (wearing another superb sweater, no doubt) happily ever after in Schitt's Creek with his butter-faced beau, Patrick. Everyone familiar with David and Patrick's swoon-worthy vows knows that David will be all about Mariah Carey's new memoir this fall.
I Don't Want to Die Poor: Essays by Michael Arceneaux
I think Michael Arceneaux's latest essay collection would also catch David's eye. Topics include Oprah, growing up queer and Black in Texas, dealing with crippling student debt and navigating fraught romantic and familial relationships.
Alexis Rose
More Than Enough: Claiming Space For Who You Are (No Matter What They Say) by Elaine Welteroth
Alexis Rose undergoes a huge personal transformation in Schitt's Creek. Alexis finally graduates, becomes a Public Relations star and gains the confidence she needs to be her own person. This lyrical memoir about pursuing your dreams while remaining true to yourself should be totally empowering and on brand for Alexis.
Spinster: Making a Life of One's Own by Kate Bolick
As Alexis is also finally embracing being a little bit single, I think she'd enjoy this look at inspiring literary women of the past who lived by their own rules, and not by societal expectations. Boop!
Rose Family Friends
The Rose Family is beyond fortunate to have such wonderful friends and loving neighbours in Schitt's Creek, a town where everyone truly does fit in. Here's a selection of recommendations for townies Stevie, Roland, Ted and Patrick.
The Berlin Stories by Christopher Isherwood
Smart and sassy Stevie Budd is an absolute revelation as Sally Bowles in the Schitt's Creek production of Cabaret. I think that Stevie, ever sentimental at heart, would appreciate checking out Sally's first appearance in this Christopher Isherwood classic.
Lessons From Lucy: The Simple Joys of an Old, Happy Dog by Dave Barry
When (if?!) Alexis' former flame Ted Mullins returns from the Galapagos, I think it is quite paw-sible that our pun-loving veterinarian would enjoy this book of dog-gone funny life advice.
The Guy Under the Sheets: The Unauthorized Autobiography by Chris Elliott
Mayor Roland Schitt would no doubt find this book, written by actor Chris Elliott, wild and weird…and vaguely familiar! I'm betting Roland even makes it past the introduction this time.
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
Patrick Brewer melts absolutely all the hearts with his open mic rendition of Tina Turner's Simply the Best. A true romantic like Patrick will definitely fall head over heels for Alex and Henry's love story in this contemporary classic.
Schitt's Creek fans, we want to hear from you! What books do you recommend for the Rose Family and Friends?
Best wishes and warmest regards to Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Annie Murphy and the entire creek on their Emmy wins!

My absolute favourite scene was Moira and David being baffled over a recipe’s instruction to fold in the cheese.
I’d recommend a basic cooking book like:
How to Cook: An Easy and Imaginative Guide for the Beginner by Raymond Sokolov
