Fat Angie

If one person can see you for who you are, and accept that then that is amazing.

That is in essence the point of this book. Angie is someone who has a heart that hurts. Her mother is horrible, the kids at school bully her and she is the only one who thinks her sister (a varsity athlete turned war hero) is even still alive.

Angie has used junk food as her coping mechanism and has thus earned the moniker of "Fat Angie". Angie is one very unhappy young woman. She has attempted suicide (in front of the entire school in the gym) and failed at it. She is now back at school simply trying to survive each day.

Then one day a new student arrives. A new student who is absolutely amazing, spiritual, warm, insightful, the kind of student who does not normally exist in a high school in the middle of Ohio. KC is the only one who sees Angie as a person and not just a fat girl.

This amazing book is darkly comic, insightful, full of amazing characters who are very well developed. I could not put it down. And so I am recommending you pick it up. You never know it might change your life.

  1. Would you like to explain how the premise is not generic? The book deals with a teen dealing with social issues, the cause of which is her weight, that sounds generic.

  2. Generic would mean that is has universal or very broad base appeal. This book does not have that aspect, it is a challenging read and the way the characters are presented make you like them and dislike them at the same time. They are well rounded, thoughtful and fully developed characters who will not do what you may expect them to do. Think of it in these terms, if this was made into a TV show it would air on HBO or Showcase, it would not be on a major network.
