Should I Buy or Rent ?

It's spring again. With the warmer weather and summer vacation approaching, it's time to decide if I should stay in my current apartment or if I should move on and buy my own house or condo.

It is not an easy decision.

The latest news of tighter lending rules and higher rates urges me to jump into the housing market.

The latest Survey of Canadian House Prices by Royal LePage also shows how house prices in Toronto and other Canadian cities have increased since last year.

But, I know that it is best to keep a cool head and do my research on buying a house or condo before making the most expensive purchase of my life.

Reliable information on buying and selling a home is available at the Canadian Real Estate Association.  The Ontario Real Estate Association offers free books as well as links to additional information.

The Toronto Public Library has a good collection of books on buying or selling a house. Here are a few titles that may be of use to you.

Daniels, Sarah.  Welcome Home : Insider Secrets for Buying or Selling Your Property : A Canadian Guide.  Mississauga, Ont. : J. Wiley & Sons Canada, 2010.

Holmes, Mike.  The Holmes Inspection : Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy or Sell Your Home.  Toronto : Collins, 2008.

Rinomato, Sandra.  Realty Check : The Real Scoop on Real Estate for First-time Canadian Home Buyers.  Mississauga, Ont. : J. Wiley & Sons Canada, 2008.

Happy house hunting to all !

  1. For me, buying your own house should be your first priority as you plan your career since it’s more of a long-term goal. In the meantime, while you still can’t afford to buy one, you can rent out an apartment or a space.
