Food… Glorious Food
Autumn is a time for fairs and thanksgiving celebrations with family and friends across Canada.
In this country, there is much to be thankful for. Aside from the magnificent fall colours and our changing landscape, many bountiful crops are harvested in the fall.
In Statistics Canada's Human Activity and the Environment: Annual Statistics 2009 report, Canadians "produce about 1.5% of the food in the world, and consume about 0.6% of world food production".
The report further states "Canada ranked 8th in the world for production of cereals, including wheat, barley and oats; 10th in meat production; and 19th in fisheries and aquaculture" in 2004.
"As a commodity, food is an important component of Canada's national economy. In 2007, $92 billion was spent on food and beverages in stores for household use, and an additional $50 billion in restaurants and bars."
For more information , the Toronto Public Library receives an electronic compendium on various Canadian food statistics from Statistics Canada. This CD-ROM is entitled Canada Food Stats and is available at the Business, Science, and Technology Department on the 3rd floor of the Toronto Reference Library. This product can also be viewed at Statistics Canada's web site.
