If you build it, they will come
Almost every company has a presence on the web today. But how do you make your website stand out and invite repeat business? Many books have been written on this topic, but a recent title caught my eye. The book, entitled The Internet Case Study Book, has examples of 60 success stories in the areas of e-commerce, corporate websites, campaigns, social media, and promotional sites. Examples range from large corporations to small businesses, each with one thing in mind – to make their business stand out from their competitors on the web. Each case is laid out citing brief, challenge, strategy and results.
One of my favorite examples is that of Dominos Pizza, who launched their on-line ordering platform in 2006, and was one of the last of the major pizza suppliers to get in to the on-line market. With the introduction of the Pizza Tracker, which allowed users to see the progress of their order in real time during five stages, and the Visual Builder, which allowed users to create their custom pizza order, the result was a 70% increase in site visits and increase of on-line orders of 1.5 times within 16 months of the introduction of the system. These changes allowed Domino's to move from third in on-line pizza ordering to first, in terms of market share.
