After his mother Alice's death in 2004, Tyler Trafford inherited a box filled with her old letters and photos. Looking through them he discovered a fascinating woman he'd never known. His latest book Almost a Great Escape tells the story of his quest to uncover the truth about his mother.
Alice Tyler had been a beautiful, vibrant debutante in Montreal during World War II and although she dreamed of a university education, she was expected to marry and marry well. This plan was complicated when Alice met and fell in love with Jens Muller, a Norwegian pilot training in Canada. The letters from Jens to Alice declare his undying love and promises to return to her. The war derailed their romance. Jens was captured by the Germans and sent to Stalag Luft III where he eventually participated in, and was one of only three survivors of, The Great Escape.
Almost a Great Escape is Tyler Trafford's poetic, touching tribute to this remarkable woman.
