Make Human
If you ever wanted to create a realistic looking character within 3D, this open source software program is a great place to start. I mentioned to a friend in passing that I was thinking of designing my own character for the popular Walking Dead TV series and they mentioned MakeHuman. MakeHuman is a software suite designed for developing human looking 3D model characters.
What really sets MakeHuman apart from the tons of other 3D software options is that you start your project with a “unique base standard human” and you morph your project from there. It’s like getting a mould in the shape of a blank human, you just need to stretch and pull it into your specific character. You can virtually create your character in less than five minutes.
Start from any of the four morphing targets, which are baby, teen, young and old and reproduce any character. Using sliders within the program you can change and effect common elements of your design like height, weight, gender, ethnic, muscularity.
Because this is an open source program, you can easily install it on any Windows, Apple or Linux based system and start shaping your designs. Highlights from the latest software release are on the website and mention some of the brand new features available to you that will help making your design more realistic.
Included are some of the following:
New hair library
Improved teeth model
New slider buttons
New clothes library
New skins library
and more.
In addition, also on the website are some great resources like the guides and a forum to help you in case you get stuck. Also a gallery to help inspire you. Some great designs are posted below that are from the MakeHuman website.

It’s so amazing !
Life like 3D figures can be made without MakeHuman, but MakeHuman added sure gives you a step up to speeding the whole process faster and easier, to that custom finish look on all levels.
MakeHuman is also compatible as a plug in for another free open source program “Blender”(3D development & animation program)
An additional option, is after you finish designing your character with the Blender & MakeHuman combo.. add a 3D printer and you can make your 3D figure happen off the screen as a actual plastic 3D figure .. How amazing is that !! ..
