Video Game Meets Book Club at Game Curious
Hosted by Toronto Reference Library Digital Innovation Hub
Toronto Reference Library’s Digital Innovation Hub is partnering with The Hand Eye Society to host Game Curious?, a six-part weekly exploration of the untapped art of video games – for artists, educators, paren'ts and non-gamers.
“Think of it like a book club… with buttons. We want to encourage people to get beyond game stereotypes and play and discuss the games themselves,” says Jim Munroe from the Hand Eye Society. “There’s an incredible array of creative expression happening in the medium that people are missing out on.” Munroe recently completed a stint as the Art Gallery of Ontario’s first-ever videogame Artist in Residence.
Each week, guests can'try out a series of games, followed by an informal discussion around the game mechanics and creation process – sometimes with the creators themselves. Console games like the silent desert game Journey, tablet games that explore the natural gas controversy like Pipe Trouble, and hand-drawn choose-your-own-adventure local games like The Yawhg will be the kind of games participants will play and discuss.
“The Digital Innovation Hub is excited to host this program. Libraries have always provided welcoming spaces where stories, technology, fun, and creativity co-exist together,” says Linda Mackenzie, Director of Research and Reference Libraries.
Following the six-week program, a small group of participants will be selected to participate in a six-part weekly video game incubation workshop at the Digital Innovation Hub. Industry experts will offer instruction and guidance to help workshop participants develop their own video game by the end of the six-week process.
