Technology Programs Help Older Adults Become Digitally Literate
Toronto Public Library is committed to supporting older adults in becoming digitally literate. We plan, design and promote opportunities to learn about technologies that enhance daily living and social inclusion. Our classes, workshops and one-on-one sessions aim to bridge the digital divide and build confidence in accessing information, services and general learning.
We know that many people need to work later in life, but face real challenges if their job skills do not match the requirements of today’s markets. Job seekers need to learn how to use the common technology tools of today, and update those skills as technology advances.
Last fall we partnered with Toronto Employment and Social Services (TESS) to offer workshops to help older job-seekers (45 years+) update their skills. TPL provides access to job-searching workshops, computer and library training classes, and more recently, a suite of valuable eLearning resources that support skills training. The workshops had one focus: eLearning resources.
What are eLearning resources? They are free, easily accessible online training resources that can help update job skills, particularly technology-related skills. Through courses such as Lynda.com, Gale Courses and Brain Fuse, job-seekers with a valid TPL card can register online, learn at their own pace and convenience, wherever internet access is available, and develop greater confidence in skills that are required in today’s job market.
* Lynda.com offers over 3,500 video tutorial courses led by experts on web design, software development, photography, business skills, home and small office, project management, 3D + Animation, graphic design audio, music, video editing and more.
* Gale Courses are more structured and offer a wide range of highly interactive, instructor-led courses that you can'take entirely online. Courses run for six weeks and new sessions begin every month. Topics range from Microsoft Office skills to accounting, graphic design, business writing and more.
* Brain Fuse is another amazing resource. It offers LIVE one-to-one academic coaching, Microsoft Office help, and skill building in its Adult Learning Centre.

We are partnering with TESS again on May 31, Digital Literacy Day. There will be a morning session at Albion Branch and an afternoon session at Cedarbrae Branch. Just bring your valid Toronto Public Library card and join us – you’ll want to explore these resources right away.
